“Fucking hell,” Maelog cursed as he stomped into the small cabin from the blizzard outside. “The ground was bare yesterday, and the skies were fucking blue! Now, the snow is up to my knees, and there’s no sign of it stopping anytime soon.”
Darron chuckled, watching as Maelog unhappily crossed to the dwindling fire and gestured at it. Such a simple movement of Maelog’s hand, but the flames responded by leaping back to life in a cheery blaze. “It’s not so bad,” he insisted, smiling at Maelog from his place on their bed. The furs only partially covered his nakedness as he lounged, and it was completely deliberate.
“How can it possibly not be so bad?” Maelog grumbled, but when he turned around as Darron knew he would, his expression softened, the frown slowly disappearing.
Darron smirked. “See? And just think, with all the snow, we don’t have to perform for the spiders. They’re all off tending their webs and hunting while they still can.”
Maelog took off his shirt with a smile, hanging it from the mantle to dry out. “All but one.”
“Aww. Your little spinner is keeping guard?” Darron propped his head up on his hand, watching Maelog undress with great interest. It was fucking adorable the way Maelog had warmed up to a single spider here in Spinners Forest. The Fire Elf was still petrified of most of them, but one bold widow had won him over. Darron was proud of him.
“Ardea is keeping our roof clear of snow and staying close,” Maelog chuckled, looking up at the roof, “aren’t you, Ardea?”
A sibilant female voice lilted to their minds, coupled with a slight scratching and shifting at the ceiling. Yes. I watch over the Dark Weaver and his White Weaver mate.
Darron grinned. Gods above, she was a sweet little spider, watching out for them even when there was no true danger. She showed signs of becoming a great amongst the other spiders, perhaps even the next Queen Widow. “Is there anything we can do for you, Ardea?”
I have a kill stored, and my web is spun. Just please keep the pipe warm? There was more shuffling and a gentle tap to the pipe that allowed the fumes from the fireplace to escape through the roof. The heat from their fire would help keep Ardea warm.
“We will keep the fire going through the night,” Maelog called up to her. “I’ll also play a song just for you in the morning.”
Darron raised an eyebrow at the promise. It amused the fuck out of him to see Maelog giving such favors to a spider, probably not even realizing how much those small things meant to the arachnids populating this forest.
A wordless excitement lilted through their minds with a little more shuffling up above their heads, and Darron felt when Ardea severed her mental link with them. He shook his head and smirked at Maelog. He didn’t have to say anything; his pride and amusement shown clearly in his violet eyes.
“What?” Maelog questioned, exasperated by his silence and expression.
“You’re spoiling her like a favorite niece. It must be the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.”
“I am not cute,” Maelog protested, but his frown didn’t reach his orange eyes, and Darron laughed. “I’m not, dammit! I’m a Dragonlord, a fierce warrior with—”
“A soft spot for a fiery, young Widow spider,” Darron finished, ignoring the way Maelog glowered at him. “Should I be jealous? Is my place in your favor threatened by your sweet, little spinner?”
The flames in the fireplace blazed brighter for a moment, glinting in Maelog’s eyes, and he watched Maelog’s frown transform into a smirk. “Bite your tongue, songbird, or I’ll be forced to bend you over my knee to prove a point.”
Darron shivered, and his nipples tightened in plain sight, his cock hardening beneath the furs haphazardly strewn over his groin. “What point would that be?”
Maelog stalked towards him, and every step seemed to make Darron’s breath shorter with anticipation. “That you are mine, and your place in my spirit can be filled by no other.”
A telltale warmth spread through Darron, moving through more than just his body as he smiled. “You can prove that with a spanking?” he asked a little breathlessly.
“I guess we’ll find out,” Maelog purred.
Before Darron could adequately prepare himself, he was pounced, and he laughed as he put up a brief, half-hearted fight. The moment Maelog’s teeth managed to close around the pulse in his neck, he gave in, allowing himself to be positioned over Maelog’s lap.
It seemed Ardea would be getting her special song earlier than expected.
Darron wasn’t about to complain.
